Staple Fiction is an Australian production company co-founded by producer Bethany Bruce, dedicated to developing and producing socially relevant and authentic stories for global audiences across both narrative and documentary formats. The company has a strong commitment to championing female voices, with its last seven productions directed and written by women.
Staple Fiction’s recent works include Make It Look Real (2024), the feature documentary debut of director Kate Blackmore, co-produced with Projector Films and producer Daniel Joyce. The film explores the unique world of Hollywood intimacy coordinators and is supported by Screen Australia, Create NSW, and the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund, with Autlook Filmsales handling international sales. Make It Look Real premiered at the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival and had its international debut at SXSW Austin 2025, where it was featured in Variety’s SXSW ‘Highs’ list and described by RogerEbert.com as “essential viewing for anyone in the industry.”
Other productions include The Art of Collecting, a short documentary for ABC about artists’ personal collections, and The Butter Scene, inspired by actor Maria Schneider’s experiences on the set of Last Tango in Paris and starring Tara Morice (Sydney Film Festival, 2021). Both were directed by Kate Blackmore.
Broken Line North, written and directed by Sunday Emerson Gullifer, was funded by the Lexus Australia Short Film Fellowship and premiered at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival. Video Becomes Us, an original art series written and directed by Blackmore, was commissioned by ABC and premiered on ABC iview in 2018.
Staple Fiction also produced Wolf, a short film written and directed by Liz Cooper, and produced by Bruce. Funded by the Screen NSW Emerging Filmmakers Fund, Wolf was nominated in the AACTA Social Shorts drama category in 2017.
Staple Fiction’s work has been showcased at prestigious international festivals including SXSW, Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Cinequest, Flickerfest. Earlier documentary commissions include Suicide and Me (2013), directed by Corrie Chen for ABC.
Co-founder Bethany Bruce is an independent film producer with extensive experience across development, production, and financing in both drama and documentary. Her work has screened at major festivals including Tribeca, TIFF, MIFF, and Sydney Film Festival. She was named a 2023 Inside Film Rising Talent in the Producer category and selected as one of Screen Producers Australia’s Ones to Watch.
